How Motion Sensors Work

Author: admin Category: Security Systems

Motion sensor alarms represent one of the most leading edge security methods today. They come in a large variety of different forms suited for different purposes. Motion detectors have existed for a while and now fall into 3 different categories. The most well known is the form that uses laser beams with a sender and receiver and when the beam is crossed, an alarm is set off or emergency services are contacted. The second type uses various forms of sound waves, ultrasonic sound waves so that you can’t hear them regularly, by using these waves the device can paint a picture of what is in front of it and if something changes, it will set off the alarm.

The third type and most commonly used form of motion sensor is an infrared detector that measures the amount of infrared waves coming from almost exclusively living things. Infrared waves are a form of heat that comes off of anything with a temperature, humans with a 93 degree skin temperature will have an infrared signature that is unique, this allows the alarm to detect exactly when there is a human in the room and when there is a pet or something else moving.

This infrared technology is crucial in the industry because when catering to homes with security needs, often time families might want motion sensing equipment installed but if the family has pets, the motion security detectors would be set off in the case that they used either lasers or ultrasonic detection systems. The infrared systems also will only make note of very rapid changes in the heat signature, for example if you have your house cool down at night, the detector will not go off because things will not cool down very rapidly compared to the infrared change that occurs when a human comes into sight.
